Camping Tents
Every tent guide and tent review we publish, grouped by the trip each tent is built for. 15 buying guides, 11 how-to guides and 150 in-depth reviews.
Start here: Best Camping Tents of 2026: Our Pick for Every Kind of Trip
Choosing a tent isn't complicated.
But the box makes it feel that way.
Capacity badges, season ratings, waterproof numbers, airbeams or poles... every listing blurs into the next. And a wrong pick doesn't show itself until the first wet night, when you're already zipped inside it.
So we've done the hard work for you.
Our testers spend hundreds of hours pitching, sleeping in and packing down tents in real weather, so you don't make a costly mistake. That leaves you two jobs:
- Find the guide for your trip in one of the five groups below.
- Pick the tent at the top of the list.
The five groups:
- Backpacking: light tents you carry, tested in real storms
- Family and group camping: big tents with room for gear, not just bodies
- Fast pitching: instant cabins and inflatables that go up without threading poles
- Canvas and hot tents: heavier shelters you can heat with a wood stove
- Emergency shelter: tube tents for the car kit or day pack
Want to compare two tents yourself? Check floor space first. Across the 15 six-person tents in our floor area table, the room each sleeper gets runs from 12.5 to 16.7 square feet, so the same "6-person" badge can mean a third more space.
Backpacking Tents
What you'll find: 11 lightweight tents Emma slept in and weighed on her own scale, from the Isle of Skye to the John Muir Trail, each with its own review.

- Best backpacking tents: the MSR Hubba Hubba LT 2 comes first
- MSR Hubba Hubba LT 2 review: our highest overall score
- Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 review
- ALPS Mountaineering Lynx 2 review: best on a budget
Family and Group Tents
What you'll find: the big tents, ranked by how they live with a family inside. Bags, boots and a wet dog all want floor too, so in most setups a family of four needs more than a 4-person tent. Our tent size calculator gives the exact size.

- Best 10 person tents: the CORE 10 Person Multi-Room Family Tent
- Best large tents: the same CORE tent leads here too
- Best 12 person tents: the CORE 12 Person Instant Cabin
Fast-Pitch Tents
What you'll find: the two designs that cut setup time. Instant cabin tents have poles fixed to the canopy, so the frame unfolds rather than threads. Inflatable tents swap the poles for airbeams you pump up.

Canvas and Hot Tents
What you'll find: canvas shelters for long stays and cold nights. Canvas is heavier than nylon and slower to dry, but it breathes, so it runs cooler in sun and drips less condensation in cold. Add a stove jack and it's a hot tent you can heat with wood.

Emergency Shelters
What you'll find: tube tents, a tube of plastic or reflective film you hang from a cord tied between two trees. They weigh next to nothing and belong in a car kit or day pack, not on a campsite.

Four Checks Before You Buy a Tent
- Floor per person, not the badge. Divide the floor area by the people sleeping in it and compare tents on that number. Our floor area table has done the sums for the tents we review.
- Peak height. To stand up inside, look for a peak of 6 feet or more. The cabin tents in our table run from 72 to 86 inches.
- Season rating. A 3-season tent is built for spring to fall. Snow load and winter wind need a 4-season tent or canvas with a stove.
- Weight against how far you carry it. The Marmot Halo 6 weighs about 21 pounds packed. That's nothing from the car trunk and a lot on a trail.
Our tent buying guide walks through the three checks our testers use, tent waterproof ratings explains what the numbers mean, and air tents vs pole tents compares the two frames.
Most campers are better served by a mid-priced tent one size bigger than their headcount than by a premium tent at the exact size. Space you can live in beats a lighter fabric you never notice on a campsite.
Wind is the real test of a tent. Ryan pitched the Marmot Halo 6 in high winds, and our review's verdict is that it's an absolute tank. He also found it's a two-person pitch.
Camping Tents FAQ
What size tent do I need for a family of four?
Most families of four need more than a 4-person tent. A tent's rating counts sleeping mats laid edge to edge with no gear inside, so sizing up gives room for bags and boots. Our tent size calculator gives the exact size from what everyone sleeps on and the weather you expect.
Are inflatable tents as strong as pole tents in wind?
Inflatable tents hold up in wind once every guy line is pitched. When we tested one in wind, the airbeams held their shape well, but the tent still needed its guy lines to stay put, just as a pole tent does. Our article on inflatable tents in wind covers how to pitch one for bad weather.
Is a canvas tent worth the extra weight?
A canvas tent is worth it if you camp from a vehicle for several nights or in cold weather. Canvas breathes, so it stays cooler in sun and drips less condensation, and it can take a wood stove. It's too heavy to carry far, and it must be dried before storage to avoid mildew.

Amazon Basics 8-Person Instant Camping Tent Review (2026): Tested for Rain, Wind and Pitch Time
Huge floor and good headroom on a budget. A single door, flimsy stakes and a leak-prone floor mean you should expect water in a heavy downpour.

CORE 9 Person Instant Cabin Tent Review (2026): Tested for Rain, Wind and Pitch Time
The biggest floor in the guide and a frame that goes up with no threading. The wind and the unsealed pockets are the weak points.

Fanttik Alpha C4 Ultra 4-Person Tent Review (2026): Tested for Rain, Wind and Pitch Time
A four-person hub tent that goes up in a minute, stays dry and fits a queen airbed with room to walk, though it is heavy to carry.

Fanttik Zeta C4 Pro 4-Person Instant Tent Review (2026): Tested for Rain, Wind and Pitch Time
A fast four-person pitch that weighs 16.72 lb and stayed dry in our rain chamber. Casual weekenders will love how quickly it goes up.

Fanttik Zeta C6 Pro 6-Person Instant Tent Review (2026): Tested for Rain, Wind and Pitch Time
A massive 90 sq ft floor that pitches fast on a budget. The floor is thin, the zippers snag, and the 5 ft 6 in centre height makes tall people duck.

Night Cat Pop Up Tent 2-3 Person Review (2026): Tested for Rain, Wind and Pitch Time
The lightest tent here at 4.2 lb and up in seconds, but it leaks at the zipper seams and folds in a modest gust, so keep it for fair weather.

Space Acacia Lite 2-3 Person Pop-Up Tent Review (2026): Tested for Rain, Wind and Pitch Time
Built like a tank, with thick 300D fabric and heavy poles that shrug off wind. You pay for it in weight and a fiddly floor.

Wakeman Outdoors 4 Person Pop-Up Tent Review (2026): Tested for Rain, Wind and Pitch Time
It opens instantly and weighs 5.5 lb, but it let in 6 oz of rain, went flat in a 15 mph gust and has a very thin floor.
