Our score: 72/100. See how it compares in Best Pop-Up and Instant Tents (2026): 10 Tested for Rain, Wind and Pitch Time

The Amazon Basics 8-Person Instant Camping Tent covers 112.0 sq ft and fit four 25 x 77 inch pads, but 2.2 oz of water wicked through its floor corners in the rain test. It scores 72 out of 100 and ranks #7 in our best pop-up tents guide as our best pop-up tent for big families.

What is the best pop-up tent for big families?

The best pop-up tent for big families is the Amazon Basics 8-Person Instant Camping Tent, which covers 112.0 sq ft and took four 25 x 77 inch pads rotated across the floor.

7. Amazon Basics 8-Person Instant Camping Tent

Amazon Basics 8-Person Instant Camping Tent
  • Dimensions: 168 x 96 in floor
  • Weight: 30.62 lb
  • Our pitch: 3:10 median
  • Our rain test: 2.2 oz

Bottom Line : Huge floor and good headroom on a budget. A single door, flimsy stakes and a leak-prone floor mean you should expect water in a heavy downpour.

  • 112.0 sq ft of floor
  • 77.4 in peak, good headroom
  • Fit four 25 x 77 in pads
  • Six-legged steel spider frame
  • 2.2 oz through untaped floor corners
  • Single door bottleneck
  • Flimsy ground stakes

Putting Up the Spider Frame in Front of Campers

Sean deployed the six-legged steel spider frame while neighbouring campers watched. The medians over 12 trials were 3:10 for the bare frame, 6:05 to stake and guy it and 5:20 to pack away, the slowest of all ten tents in all three measures. The bench said 168 x 96 inches (112.0 sq ft), a 77.4 inch peak, 30.62 lb (13.89 kg) and a packed size of 48.0 x 10.5 x 10.5 inches.

Four 25 x 77 inch pads fit rotated across the 96 inch width, leaving a 19 inch side strip, using 100 inches of the length and leaving a 68 inch deep area at the far end. Campers liked the headroom.

In 20 mph gusts the long sidewalls fluttered 11.0 inches, and an experienced camper who looked it over noted there is no structural gusseting. In the rain chamber, 2.2 oz of liquid wicked through the untaped floor corners at the peg-out anchor stitching.

Emma showed the corner floor seams where seam sealer would need applying by hand. And the stress rack was unkind: limestone dust caused audible grinding in the molded nylon elbow hinges, and dropping an unlocked leg on cycle 16 left stress-whitening on the plastic knuckle.

Where It Asks Something of You

It asks you to finish the job. Plan on seam sealer for the floor corners and better stakes than the flimsy ones in the bag.

It also asks for a second person at the frame, and for patience with one door when eight people need to get in and out.

Spec Sheet vs Our Test

Easy setup in 60 seconds. The title promises an easy 60 second setup. The bare frame took a median of 3:10 over 12 trials, more than three times the claim, and a fully staked-and-guyed pitch took 6:05. This is the slowest tent in the guide, and the claim is the one we would trust least.

Weather-resistant with rainfly. The title says weather-resistant with a rainfly. In the 60 minute chamber run, 2.2 oz came through the untaped floor corners at the peg-out anchor stitching, and we would expect a leak in a heavy downpour. Seam sealer applied by hand to those corners is the fix.

8-person. The title says eight person. We did not put eight in it. We fitted four 25 x 77 inch pads across the floor with a 68 inch deep area left over, which is a big family's worth of beds with room for bags, and not eight sleepers.

Should You Buy the Amazon Basics 8-Person Instant Camping Tent?

Buy the Amazon Basics 8-Person if floor area for the money is what you need, the forecast is dry, and you are willing to seal seams and replace stakes. It has the second-biggest floor in the guide, and headroom campers liked.

Do not buy it for wet weather or for speed. For a big floor that is stiffer and drier, the Space Acacia Lite; for a bigger floor still, the CORE 9 Person; for a fast, dry four-person pitch, the Alpha C4 Ultra.

Editor's Note, 5 November 2026: New review. Emma tested the Night Cat, and Ryan the Fanttik Alpha C4 Ultra and Wakeman, on the bench and at the campground in October 2026. Sean, Emma, James and Annie tested the other five new tents, with 12 timed trials per tent, a 60-minute rain chamber run and a campground phase. Gazelle and Coleman scores and figures come from their own reviews.
