Our Verdict: Honda EU2200i Inverter Generator With 20 Amp Outlet
What are the main features to make a camping generator stand out?
For me, it’s the right balance of power output, portability and ease-of-use.
Now consider the Honda EU2200i inverter technology generator.
It’s a lightweight model that’s reliable, easy to use, and offers a super-quiet noise level.
Also, it has top-class fuel efficienct power and advanced inverter technology.
Moreover, you have the manufacturer stamp that makes it an ultra-dependable choice for outdoor use.
In fact, the EU2200i has held its spot as one of the most popular generators in the market for years.
What really makes the product so special?
It’s the precision with which the quality parts are assembled to provide an inverter technology generator that’ll serve you for years.
And note – that’s true not just for this model, but also for the Honda EU3000iS, our top pick in this segment.
It’s at the top end of the price range, but you’ll get complete value for your money.
So is it worth a detailed look?
I say it definitely is.
Now, let’s get this show on the road.

Our Analysis, Comparisons & Test Results: Honda eu2200i Generator
The fact is, we left no stone unturned to review our top 10 inverter generators for you.
The TopNotch team gathered up the 10 top-rated portable generators for an RV trip to two different camping sites.
Honestly, handling, carrying, connecting, and testing these products for each of the metrics wasn’t an easy task at all.
Don’t ask how we managed but we did it.
In the end, even though the 2200i wasn’t among the TopNotch Top Picks, we simply couldn’t ignore its excellent overall performance and quality.
So let’s put it in the limelight to discover more.
Just think about it…
A generator so quiet that your neighbors will thank you for it.
Now, I don’t know if you have friendly neighbors but one thing’s for sure.
This is one of the quietest models you’ll find on the market – the noise level is remarkably low – they’re going to be happy.
Noise Output Rating
Its rated noise levels are between 48 to 57 dBA which is even below normal conversation levels.
In line with most manufacturers, we tested the noise levels from a distance of 23 feet while running the eu2200i close to 90% of its output.
Remarkably, our sound level meter showed a reading of 57 dB
Quite simply, the low noise levels make it fine to use this generator in any environment where noise might be a problem.
So if you need a quiet performer within the 2000 Watt mark, this is definitely a top choice.
There’s only one other competitor which matched the Honda in terms of noise output, the WEN 56125i generator.
In case your power requirements are high, the Honda EU3000iS model is another extremely quiet option.
The thing is, power output is a relative concept depending on user requirements.
What’s the amount of power it delivers?
A maximum output of 2200 Watts and a running power of 1800 Watts.
Power Output Rating
As per the specifications, it has a run time of 8 hours with the load being kept at 25%.
We think considering the small fuel tank (0.95 gallon), that’s an impressive performance.
And the secret behind that is…
The special eco-throttle technology reduces the fuel consumption of these inverter technology generators by almost 40%.
In our campsite, we used it to charge a laptop, two Smartphones, a string of LED lights, and a small fan.
With the load varying from 40% to 60%, it lasted around five hours.
Your new Honda will be able to run most appliances in an RV or on a campsite.
However, it’s not capable of powering equipment requiring a heavy engine starting power.
But, it also offers the option of a parallel connection between two identical models for additional power.
Ease Of Use
The truth is, the TopNotch team has always found Honda models extremely user friendly and this is no exception.
In fact, even if you compare the older EU2000i vs the EU2200i, the ease of use is pretty much the same.
Firstly, the control panel is perfectly designed.
The three LEDs indicate over load, low oil, and output that makes things easy.
Ease Of Use Rating
In terms of outlets, you get a two 120V Ac outlet, a 12V DC outlet, and a 20A duplex port.
It doesn’t have a push-button start for the engine but the recoil works pretty smoothly.
On top of that, there’s the inverter technology to ensure clean power for all manner of electronics.
One more thing the TopNotch team liked on this model was the fuel shutoff option.
It runs the engine until all the fuel in the carburetor is consumed, eliminating any chances of problems resulting from stale fuel.
The manufacturer has provided all the standard safety features including an electronic circuit breaker and a low-oil shutoff.
To sum up, the 2200i keeps life simple enough even for first-time users.
These generators are real smooth operators.
But do take note, the Champion 3800 Watt generator was equally good under this metric and it comes in a much lower price range.
Frankly, the EU2200i is a pricey piece of equipment.
So durability is a metric where it needed to put in an excellent performance.
And the truth is, we were very satisfied.
While it lacked the robust metal frame of our Top Picks, it’s pretty solidly built model.
In addition, Honda has added little details that make a neat difference.
For example, the stamped metal recoil rope insert that prevents any damage to the engine during starting.
And you know what?…
The EU2200i offers more ventilation for the critical components.
The result is a significant reduction in heat build-up.
Then you have the commercial-grade quality Honda GXR120 engine which is a top performer.
Every piece of magnet used in the generator is of the highest quality.
Finally, it also comes with a USDA-approved spark arrestor.
Let’s not forget the warranty.
It comes with 3-years of commercial and residential warranty.
We were more than happy with that.
But only if you don’t mind the extra weight.
Weight & Portability
Let’s admit one thing here.
A generator that’s easy to carry around is definitely advantageous for outdoor lovers.
However, when you compare the weight with the power output, things can get a bit tricky.
Coming back to the EU2200i, it has a dry weight of circa 47 pounds.
Also, the small fuel tank makes it easy to carry around even when it has a full load of fuel.
Note, the overall dimensions stand at 20.0 x 11.4 x 16.7 inches (L x W x H)…
…compact enough for storing in tight spots.
But let me tell you that we had no problems carrying the EU2200i. The handle gave an excellent grip at all times.
In the end, the Honda inverter technology EU2200i occupied the third spot of all the portable generators in this metric.
With just 31 pounds under its belt the WEN 56125i generator finished in the top spot.
As I said before, as the power delivery goes up, generators tend to get heavier.
So the final choice will depend upon your priorities.
Honestly, there’s nothing worse than manufacturers who are stingy with accessories.
Unfortunately, Honda aren’t hugely generous here.
With the higher price tag, we expected more.
In fact, all you get is the owner manual.
One good thing is, the oil filler opening is large and has a longer spout.
So you won’t need a funnel.
Also, the oil drain gutter is well designed making the oil changes easier on this model.
In Honda’s defense, the Honda EU2200i specs and great design mean minimum maintenance with the least amount of accessories necessary.
In any case, you won’t need a wheel kit for the EU2200i.
Still, we do wish Honda would have at least included 12V battery cables with the eu2000i for power for car batteries like some of its competitors.
The best performers in the metric are the two Champions with the Champion 3800 Watt model finishing at the top spot.
