Head-to-Head Results
Scores out of 10 are from our best inverter generators guide, where both rank in the top ten.
Quietness
Where we tested it. Side by side on the trip, at a quarter load and under medium to heavy loads.
What separated them. At a quarter load the Honda read about 48 dBA and the Champion about 53. Under medium to heavy loads the gap grew: the Honda was clearly quieter, and its engine vibration damping was much better.
What it felt like. The Champion's note is raspier and easy enough to tune out; the Honda you mostly forget is running.
Portability & Weight
Where we tested it. Carried in and out of camp.
What separated them. The Champion is lighter, at 39.7 lb against the Honda's 47.4. Both are one-person carries; the Champion is the one you take down a steep trail with a cooler in the other hand.
What it felt like. The 8 lb difference shows on long carries, not on the walk from the truck.
Runtime & Efficiency
Where we tested it. Hours per tank at a quarter load.
What separated them. The Champion ran 11.5 hours on 1.1 gallons, the Honda 8.5 on 0.95. Per gallon they are close; the Champion carries a little more fuel.
What it felt like. Either one lasts an evening and a night of light camp loads.
Power & Capability
Where we tested it. Camp loads and motor starts.
What separated them. The Champion has the bigger starting surge, 2,500 W against 2,200, though owners report it still trips on a 13,500 BTU AC without a soft starter. The Honda ran a 15,000 BTU AC with a soft starter, and two in parallel ran a 30 amp RV panel.
What it felt like. For tools and short surges the Champion has the edge; for long, heavy running, the Honda is the calmer machine.
