At this point, I must say it wasn’t among the TopNotch top choices in the small generator category.
But an extremely capable model like this couldn’t escape our attention.
Hence, we decided to present a 2200i review for those special buyers who’re not easily satisfied.
In fact, there are some features that make it a unique offering in this category.
Now, without heading into a Generac vs Honda debate, I can safely say Generac has built a great reputation in the past decade.
Strictly speaking, our tests left that reputation undented.
So hang on as I explain all the details to you.
Noise Output
Basically, the design plays an important role in its overall noise output.
No wonder, that the closed design of the 2200i keeps it quieter than the open-frame models.
Moreover, it comes with a smaller 80cc engine that should be on the quieter side.
Theoretically at least.
Hmmm.
Noise Output Rating
The only problem is…
When you compare the sound levels of the Generac GP2200i vs Honda eu2200i, the Honda emerges as the clear winner.
We checked the sound levels of the 2200i and it went close to the 70 dB mark at full load.
However, running it at around 30% of the load kept the noise levels at around 50dB.
That should be good enough for visiting National parks that have sound restrictions, if it provides you with enough running watts.
Interestingly, once you switch on the eco-mode, the noise levels are lower.
Surprisingly, Generac doesn’t mention its sound levels in the specs.
However, when using it at medium loads, it’ll be as quiet as an air-conditioning unit.
Gotta say, the competition in this segment is tough.
In the end, our analysis resulted in it being placed at the lower end of the scale under this metric.
If a super quiet option is what you want, the Honda eu2200i is definitely the TopNotch choice. You really can’t get any quieter than that in this category.
Power Output
Let’s start with the facts.
The 2200i delivers 1,700 running watts and 2,200 surge watts.
The fuel tank capacity is 1.2 Gallons.
Honestly, those figures are not as high as some of the other models the TopNotch team has reviewed.

Now, some may call this to be a trade-off for portability.
But here, I’ll beg to differ.
In reality, Generac has designed this model for a particular segment of users and optimized its performance based on that.

You can try the elder sibling, GP3000i.
And don’t forget, two of these devices can be connected in parallel to get a running power output of around 3200 Watts.
But keep in mind you’ll need to buy a separate connection kit for that.
Coming to the test results…
At a 25% load, the 2200i should deliver 10 hours of run time.
In our campsite in the Mountain Meadow RV Park it ran at 50% of the load.
That included a mini-refrigerator, a laptop, and some LED lights.
It lasted for a little over 6 hours.
Note that the economy mode can optimize run time even further.
Ease Of Use
From all aspects, the 2200i is one of those generators designed for users who like to keep things simple.
The recoil start works like a charm and it started with a single pull in our tests.
Moreover, the control panel has a fantastic layout. We loved the fact that all the outlets come with durable plastic covers.
Ease Of Use Rating
The start dial combines the three functions of choke, run, and stop in a simple setup.
Now that’s a very smart piece of designing.
But wait – there’s more.
Apart from a 12V DC outlet, you also get a USB outlet for connecting electronic devices.
You also get a 5-20R 120V Duplex receptacle.
In addition, there are LED indicators to guide you with the use. The light will indicate low oil, overload, and ready to use conditions.
The inverter mechanism combined with Truepower technology results in the delivery of clean power.
Naturally, the harmonic distortions are very low even when you run it close to its full capacity.
What that means is, charging the sensitive electronic devices is completely safe.
Talking about safety…
The 2200i is also equipped with a low-oil shutdown feature to safeguard the engine.
On the whole, it isn’t far behind the Honda EU3000iS, our top choice, in terms of ease of use.
Durability
When you’re planning to head outdoors with a portable inverter generator it needs to be durable.
There’s no question about it.
So how does the 2200i fare?
The fact is, while it isn’t on par with the best models, we did like the overall durability.

To keep the weight light, Generac hasn’t used metal parts in the casing.
However, the plastic used is of top quality.
Also, the addition of covers to all the outlets ensures that it won’t be damaged if you are caught in a sudden downpour. And another thing…
The switches are also dust-resistant.
However, it’s not waterproof and we noticed some scratches on the outer surface.
We really don’t think it’ll survive prolonged rough handling or a steep drop.
So in the end, the 2200i ended up at the lower end of our list under this metric.
Weight & Portability
One thing’s for sure.
Portability is a major selling point of the 2200i.
The good thing is Generac has kept its weight at 46 pounds.
Just in case you compare the Generac vs Honda portable generators, you’ll note the weight is almost the same as the EU2200i.

In reality, the light-weight and the comfortable handle makes carrying it around a breeze.
The best part is, even when the fuel tank’s fully loaded, it’s still easy to carry.
However, if you’re searching for a generator with a wheelbase, you’ll need to look elsewhere.
Do keep in mind Generac don’t offer a standard wheel kit.
It turned out the 2200i is slightly heavier than the Pulsar even though they’re of similar construction.
So it ended up in third place under this metric.
To sum up, if you’re in the market to choose portable and easy-to-use generators, this is one perfect choice.
Accessories
When it comes to accessories, the TopNotch team’s philosophy is simple.
The more the better.
But the truth is, the GP2200i doesn’t pack in much in the way of accessories.
One important thing you may need here is the parallel kit.
But as we mentioned, that’s sold separately.

The only extra item you get in the box is the manual. It does have nicely detailed guidelines.
Now that’s an added advantage for first-time users.
Finally, it requires minimum maintenance – always a plus in our eyes.
Also, the entire design focuses on ease of use. Simply load up the tank and it’s ready to deliver a steady supply of power.
Nevertheless, compared with the competitors like the Champion 3800 which offer so much more in the way of extras, the 2200i doesn’t fare well under this metric.

When you take into account the price and performance, the 2200i is a practical choice for a specific range of buyers.
Firstly, it boasts a clean power delivery that can last up to 10 long hours.
On top of that, it’s inexpensive and you can run it straight out of the box.
Obviously, the build quality isn’t exactly on par with our other favourites the Honda EU3000iS or Yamaha EF2400iSHC.
But, take the price factor into account and you’ve got a good package on your hands.
Finally, excellent portability is one aspect that makes it perfect for camping, tailgating, or even in a job site.
While it may not be the quietest…
