Pros

  • About 25 lb
  • Clean power for camera and drone batteries
  • 6.5 hours at half load

Cons

  • Messy small oil fill plug
  • Small tank needs frequent refills under load

In the Field

Our testers used the GENMAX GM1200i at a backpacking base camp, for a field camera setup and on a kayak camping trip. It ran a drone battery multi-charger, a laptop, camera gear, lanterns and a heating pad.

It read about 52 dBA at a quarter load and ran 6.5 hours at half load on 0.7 gallons, and its clean sine wave charged camera, drone and phone batteries without trouble.

At about 25 lb with a molded top handle, it is the easiest generator in our inverter guide to carry.

Where It Asks Something of You

The small oil fill plug is messy to service, and the small tank needs refilling often under heavy draw. We tested it as a single unit, not in parallel.

Spec Sheet vs Our Test

At only 25.3 pounds. GENMAX lists 25.3 lb, the lightest inverter in our guide, and it carried like it.

As low as 58 dBA at 25% load. GENMAX quotes 58 dBA at a quarter load; our testers logged about 52 dBA. Either way, it is quiet enough for a campsite.

Up to 6.5 hours at 50% load. GENMAX quotes 6.5 hours at half load on 0.66 gallons, and that is what we got.

Should You Buy the GENMAX GM1200i?

Buy it if you need a light, cheap way to charge cameras, drones and laptops in camp.

Skip it if silence and the cleanest power matter: the Honda EU1000i is quieter and the benchmark for sensitive gear. For appliances, a 2,000 W class unit like the WEN 56225i.
