Our score: 76/100. See how it compares in 10 Best Small Generators of 2026

A 15,000 BTU travel trailer air conditioner started on gas and on propane when our testers ran the Westinghouse iGen2800DFc on a late-summer boondocking trip, and it later kept two refrigerators cold through North Carolina mountain storms. It scores 76 out of 100 and ranks #9 in our best small generators guide as our best small generator for home.

Top-Notch Choice Award

What is the best small generator for home?

The best small generator for home is the Westinghouse iGen2800DFc, which kept two full-size refrigerators cold through a recent North Carolina mountain storm and topped off two large power stations.

Westinghouse iGen2800DFc Dual Fuel Inverter Generator

Value for Money8/10
Output Power9/10
Durability/Workmanship7/10
Dependability and Reliability7/10
Noise7/10
  • Output: 2,200 W gas, 1,980 W propane
  • RV outlet: TT-30R, 30 amp
  • Our noise reading: about 55 dBA, quarter load
  • Weight: 47 lb with oil

Bottom Line : A dual fuel inverter that ran a 15,000 BTU air conditioner on gas and on propane and kept a house cold through a storm, though the propane cold start is finicky and it gets loud under an air conditioner.

Pros

  • Ran a 15,000 BTU air conditioner on gas and on propane
  • Built-in 30 amp RV outlet
  • Over 12 hours on a 20 lb propane tank
  • Kept two full-size refrigerators running at home

Cons

  • Cold start on propane takes extra pulls
  • About 55 dBA at a quarter load, mid-60s when the air conditioner runs
  • Gas runtime fell short of the listing's 12 hours

On the Road and in the Storm

Our testers took the iGen2800DFc on a late-summer boondocking trip, then ended up relying on it at home when the grid dropped in the recent North Carolina mountain storms. On the trip it ran a travel trailer's 15,000 BTU air conditioner. At home it kept two full-size refrigerators cold and topped off a large EcoFlow and an Anker power station.

It handled the 15,000 BTU surge well on both gas and propane, and the two fridges at home never made it bog down.

The listing claims 52 dBA. On the UT353 in an open field the unit read 55 dBA at 23 feet at a quarter load. It's pleasantly quiet at idle, but when the air conditioner compressor kicks on it jumps into the mid-60s. It gets loud under a heavy pull, though not eardrum-rattling.

On a full tank of gas at a low load, just charging stations and running lights, it ran just over 10 hours. Separately, on a standard 20 lb propane tank it passed the 12 hour mark overnight with the camper powered. On a scale it weighed 47 lb with oil, against a listing claim of 45.

Where It Asks Something of You

Cold starting on propane is finicky. It takes a few extra pulls to get the gas flowing, where gasoline starts on one pull.

It gets loud when the air conditioner runs. The mid-60s dBA under a compressor start isn't Honda territory, and a quarter load at 55 dBA is above the 52 claim.

The gas runtime doesn't reach the listing's 12 hours. Just over 10 hours at a low load is the figure on gas, and the 12 hours came on propane.

Spec Sheet vs Our Test

2,200 W running on gas, 1,980 W on propane. Westinghouse's listing rates the gas running watts at 2,200 and the propane at 1,980, with 2,800 W and 2,520 W at the peak. A 15,000 BTU air conditioner started on both fuels, and two household refrigerators ran together at home. That's enough for a camper air conditioner or a kitchen, though we haven't asked it to do both at once.

Built-in TT-30R 30 amp RV outlet. The listing puts a TT-30R and a 20 amp duplex on the panel. The feature our testers like best is plugging the camper straight in without a dogbone adapter, which saves hunting for a part at a trailhead and one connection that can fail.

52 dBA claimed. The UT353 read 55 dBA at 23 feet at a quarter load, three above the claim, and the mid-60s when the air conditioner compressor started. For a house it's acceptable; for a campground with quiet hours, expect the compressor to be heard.

Up to 12 hours run time. The listing claims 12 hours. On propane our testers got past 12 hours on a 20 lb tank overnight with the camper powered. On gas at a low load it ran just over 10 hours on a full tank, so on a single tank of gasoline the claim is a stretch. The two runs were not at matched loads, so don't read them as a fuel comparison.

Dual fuel. The dual fuel does what it says. It keeps you from hauling gas cans in the truck bed and lets you run off a standard barbecue tank, but the cold start on propane takes extra pulls. Plan to start it on gasoline for a quick job and on propane for a long one.

Should You Buy the Westinghouse iGen2800DFc?

Buy the iGen2800DFc if you want a light dual fuel unit for a camper or a house. It's built for the RV owner who doesn't want gas cans in the truck bed and for the homeowner who wants a backup that keeps the kitchen cold.

Look elsewhere if quiet is your priority or you want the easiest start on every fuel. The Honda EU2200i is far quieter under load, and the Westinghouse iGen2550 is lighter. For a bigger dual fuel unit, see the WEN 3600 Dual Fuel.
