Under a Heavy Load

The Duro feels more like a small backpack harness than a flexible garment. The twin chest straps slide on vertical plastic tracks, so you can set their height exactly, and under a heavy load it was among the steadiest vests we ran in.

The version our testers ran came with Osprey's 1.5 L Hydraulics LT reservoir, which has a stiff plastic spine. As you drink, the water can't pool into a ball at the bottom of the pack, so the bladder stays flat against your back.

Built to Last, Slow to Break In

The harness material is stiff out of the box and took several long runs to soften. That stiffness is the flip side of how tough it is: the hardware, buckles and heavy zippers are virtually indestructible next to ultralight stretch-mesh vests.

One thing to watch: on recent models, the front chest pockets sit high, near the collarbones. On fast downhills, full soft flasks bounced up toward the jaw unless they were locked down tight.

Spec Sheet vs Our Test

• Hydration: the current Duro 6 on Amazon ships with two 500 mL soft flasks with WingStay stabilizers, and it is reservoir compatible. It does not come with the reservoir we tested.
• Storage: Osprey lists six stretch fuel pockets, a vertical-zip front pocket, two zipped rear compartments and a front trekking pole carry.
• Sizing: men's fit in three sizes by chest circumference.
• Range: the Duro also comes as the 1.5 and the Pro 10.

Should You Buy the Osprey Duro 6?

Yes, if you carry heavy loads or wear out lighter vests, and you prefer stability to a stretchy fit. If you want the flat-back reservoir our testers liked, buy an Osprey Hydraulics reservoir alongside it.
