This tent was one of the 10 best tents in its category that we tested in as many different environments and weather conditions as we could.
From the snowy foothills of the mountains to lending it to friends for a thru-hike, we put this tent to the test.
It came out with flying colors.
When testing products, we use a range of metrics to compare their performance across different categories. One tent might be incredibly easy to pitch, but only really suitable for one sort of trip.
During our trials, the OneTigris Smokey HUT topped the leaderboard in quite a few categories.
So let’s take a closer look at our findings to see exactly why we chose this tent for our TopNotch Best Value award.
Livability
The OneTigris teepee scores pretty well in this category, with 8/10.
For its size and weight, this tent does a great job of keeping you comfortable.
But don’t forget this is a tent designed for lightweight backpacking trips.
While the diameter is pretty generous at 10’4”, the maximum height at the center is just 5’2”. This means it’s not the most comfortable for longer trips, but still more comfortable than your usual tunnel tent.
Hence why we docked a few points.
For the price and intended purpose though, this offers an excellent level of livability for shorter trips where equipment weight is going to be one of your first considerations.
Weather Resistance

We were super impressed with just how weather resistant this tent is, given its ultralight type.
The silicon-coated nylon outer does a great job of protecting you from winter weather.
While the seams have been treated with a special waterproofing treatment too.
What about the pyramid shape?
Pyramid or teepee shaped tents are one of the best designs for weather resistance.
Want to know why?
The tapered shape resists collecting snow or rain on the sides - instead it falls down and sits at the bottom. This means the walls of your tent aren’t subjected to additional stresses.
It’s also an excellent shape for wind resistance because there aren’t any high flat sides for the wind to push against
Bottom line?
The only thing stopping this tent achieving full marks here is that it comes without a groundsheet. We highly recommend adding your own.
Durability
The Smokey HUT scores a respectable 8/10 for durability.
Despite the nylon fabric being exceptionally lightweight, it’s also very durable.
That means you can look forward to many seasons of use.
The waterproof zippers are manufactured by YKK.
World-famous for their high-quality and long-lasting zips.
As well as being lightweight the aluminum tent poles are built to last.
The only tent to score higher is made of canvas which is well-known to be the most durable fabric for tents.
Ease Of Use
This tent is incredibly easy to pitch.
The single central pole and low height mean it’s a breeze to set this up.
In fact, we found with a bit of practice we could pitch this tent in less than five minutes. With just one person.
We liked that...
Once you have the pole in place, it’s simply a case of pegging out the base and securing the guy lines.
This tent comes complete with 12 lightweight stakes too.
So if you’re camping in snowy weather and need to get your tent up quickly, this is a winner for us.
And as an added bonus…
You get a super small stuff sack that fits your tent outer, stakes and guy lines.
We did find the stuff sac just a wee bit too small to comfortably hold the central collapsible pole without it poking out of the top.
Versatility
Once again, this tent performs extremely well in terms of versatility.
It scored 8/10.
When it comes to versatility, of course, you might not be fussed - you might want to buy a tent with only one particular trip in mind.
But it’s always good to know you can also use it for other vacations.
And in the case of the Smokey HUT, this is the sort of tent I always want to have in our storeroom.
It’s equally as suitable for a short weekend backpacking as it is on a long hunting trip in snowy mountains.
There’s only one trip we wouldn’t choose to use this tent for.
And that’s a long trip with more than 3 people in the same tent. It’s not large enough.
In this case, I’d rather have the White Duck. You can comfortably accommodate 6 in this tent.
