Sufix 832 Advanced Ice Braid
Bottom Line : The strongest, most sensitive line here, but the braid ices in the guides and needs a mono or fluoro leader for stealth.
Pros
- Best in class sensitivity
- Very high strength for its diameter
- Sheds water better than plain braid
- Lasts multiple seasons
Cons
- Ices up in the rod guides
- Highly visible without a leader
- Costs more than mono
An 8-fiber ice braid, 7 HMPE strands plus 1 GORE fiber woven at 32 picks per inch, that transmits the faintest tap through zero stretch. Near zero stretch means light panfish and walleye bites register instantly at the rod. Anglers report feeling strikes clearly at 20 to 30 feet where mono goes numb.
The Low-Vis Green color is meant to disappear in stained water, not clear water. The strongest, most sensitive line here, but the braid ices in the guides and needs a mono or fluoro leader for stealth. It scores 85 out of 100.
We felt every tick a walleye gave us down 25 feet, but we had to keep wiping the guides with lip balm or they iced solid inside ten minutes.

A budget monofilament built from Nylon 6, Nylon 6,6, and Nylon 12 in a triple extrusion, sold in a long 300 yard Ice Clear spool. A 300 yard spool at 10 lb costs a fraction of the braid and fluoro options here. You get enough line to fill several small ice reels from one spool.
As a nylon mono it stretches, which softens light bites before they reach the rod. A cheap, clear tripolymer mono that does the basic job well for the price, though it stretches like any nylon. It scores 78 out of 100.
For what we paid we filled three reels and the clear line did not spook fish in clean water, but we lost a couple of soft bites the stretch swallowed.

Berkley Trilene Micro Ice (Clear Steel)
Bottom Line : A thin, well-behaved ice mono in a two-tone color that hides underwater but stays visible to you on top.
Pros
- Minimal ice build-up
- Stays soft and resists coiling
- Two-tone color visible on top, hidden below
- Strong for its diameter
Cons
- Mono stretch softens light bites
- Short 110 yard spool
- Not as invisible as fluoro
A dedicated micro-diameter ice monofilament in Clear Steel, built to stay pliable in the cold and resist coiling under the ice. The 110 yard spool is priced low and fills small ice reels easily. It is a long-running Berkley product owners trust season after season.
Being a nylon mono it stretches, so it dampens light bites compared with braid or fluoro. A thin, well-behaved ice mono in a two-tone color that hides underwater but stays visible to you on top. It scores 82 out of 100.
The Clear Steel is genius, we could see it against the snow but the trout could not see it down the hole, though the stretch cost us a couple of the lightest taps.

Sufix Ice Magic Low-Temperature Mono
Bottom Line : The most manageable mono in deep cold, with a special polymer that stays supple where standard line coils.
Pros
- Stays supple in sub-zero cold
- Very low memory, lays straight
- Additives cut ice build-up
- Smooth handling
Cons
- Mono stretch limits sensitivity
- Only average strength
- Costs more than budget mono
An all-purpose ice monofilament with a low-temperature formula that keeps it soft and low-memory in sub-zero air, in a Glacier Blue color. The special low-temp polymer stays supple in sub-zero cold where standard mono coils heavily. Special additives cut water absorption that causes ice build-up.
As nylon mono it stretches, which softens the faintest bites at the rod. The most manageable mono in deep cold, with a special polymer that stays supple where standard line coils. It scores 82 out of 100.
It came off the spool dead straight at minus ten and we never fought coils all day, though like any mono it soaked up a few of the softest bites.

Seaguar IceX Fluorocarbon
Bottom Line : True 100 percent fluorocarbon that is nearly invisible underwater and sinks fast, at a premium price on short spools.
Pros
- Nearly invisible underwater
- Very low stretch and sensitive
- Low memory in deep cold
- Strong abrasion resistance
Cons
- Expensive per yard
- Short 50 yard spool
- Only light test weights
A micro-diameter ice line made from Seaguar 100 percent fluorocarbon resins, built for near-invisibility and low stretch in hard water. Fluorocarbon bends light close to water, making it the hardest line here for fish to see. This near-invisibility is the whole point and earns the perfect 10.
The line carries exceptional knot and tensile strength for its thin diameter. True 100 percent fluorocarbon that is nearly invisible underwater and sinks fast, at a premium price on short spools. It scores 84 out of 100.
Nothing else got bit like this in clear water, the fish just could not see it, but the 50 yard spool and the price made us wince refilling reels.

Reaction Tackle Ice Braid (8-Strand)
- Type: Braid, 8 strand
- Material: PE fibers, coated
- Coating: Fluoropolymer, hydrophobic
- Labeled test: 6 lb
- Length: 150 yards
- Color: Ice Camo
- Stretch: Zero
Bottom Line : A strong, sensitive 8-strand ice braid aimed at tip-ups and big fish, but like all braid it ices in the guides.
Pros
- Zero stretch, high sensitivity
- Strong 8-strand build for big fish
- Coated to slow freeze-up
- Cheaper than premium braid
Cons
- Still ices in the guides
- Visible without a leader
- Needs leader for clear water
An 8-strand PE braid with a fluoropolymer and hydrophobic coating, sold as tip-up and big-fish line in an Ice Camo color. Zero stretch means you feel every nibble and can set the hook fast. The 8-strand build is smooth and thin, sharpening bite feel.
The Ice Camo color breaks up in the water but braid has no transparency. A strong, sensitive 8-strand ice braid aimed at tip-ups and big fish, but like all braid it ices in the guides. It scores 78 out of 100.
It handled a heavy pike on a tip-up with room to spare, but the guides still froze over and we had to keep a rag handy all afternoon.

Berkley Trilene Micro Ice (Solar Hi-Vis)
Bottom Line : The same good ice mono in a bright Solar color that you can watch for bites, which is exactly why it scores low on stealth.
Pros
- Bright color shows light bites
- Easy for beginners to read
- Minimal ice build-up
- Low price
Cons
- Highly visible to fish by design
- Mono stretch mutes feel
- Needs a leader for clear water
The Solar hi-vis version of Trilene Micro Ice, a bright yellow-green mono built so beginners can see light bites as line movement above the hole. The 110 yard spool is priced low, matching the Clear Steel version. It is a trusted Berkley line that lasts multiple seasons.
The bright Solar color is highly visible, and that visibility is the whole feature, not a flaw. The same good ice mono in a bright Solar color that you can watch for bites, which is exactly why it scores low on stealth. It scores 79 out of 100.
Watching the bright line twitch told us about bites we never felt, which is perfect for learning, but we would never use this color over spooky clear-water fish.

RUNCL PowerFluoro Fishing Line
Bottom Line : A fluoro-coated copolymer hybrid, not true fluorocarbon, that mimics invisibility cheaply but the coating wears and strength is uneven.
Pros
- Very cheap for near-fluoro looks
- Virtually invisible when fresh
- Sinks fast
- Long spool lengths
Cons
- Not true fluorocarbon, coating wears off
- Inconsistent break strength
- Core absorbs water and weakens
A hybrid leader line with a fluorocarbon coating over a copolymer core, sold as virtually invisible and thin at a low price. It is far cheaper than the true fluorocarbon Seaguar and comes in long 300 to 1000 yard spools. Reviewers call it a clever way to get close to fluoro performance for less money.
This is a fluoro-coated copolymer hybrid, not 100 percent fluorocarbon, and strength is inconsistent. A fluoro-coated copolymer hybrid, not true fluorocarbon, that mimics invisibility cheaply but the coating wears and strength is uneven. It scores 70 out of 100.
Fresh on the reel it was nearly invisible and cheap enough to love, but this is coated hybrid line, not real fluoro, and the strength let us down on a heavier fish.
