Our Analysis, Comparisons & Test Results

As always, our team thoroughly tested the self-inflating mattresses in a variety of rugged conditions ranging from snow-covered mountains to our spare room.

We spent a lot of time reclined so you’ll be sure our camping mat reviews come from tried and true time in the field.

After all, that’s how you’re going to be spending most of your time with this mattress.

The overall performance leads the pack of foam mattress camping pads and impressed everyone on the team, even those with pesky back or hip issues.

Furthermore, the large dimensions were ample for even our larger reviewers to stretch out after a day spent in nature.

We tried out the product using five metrics that are of the utmost concern when choosing a memory foam pad for camping.

Believe me, we spent more time napping - ahem, working - than we dreamed possible.

Now it’s time to get a bit more insight into our scoring.

Comfort

Let’s face it.

Comfort is KING.

Whether you are shelling out the dough for a bed at home or the best car camping sleeping pad, comfort is the name of the game.

If you’re like me, age and injury has brought on some aches now and again.

Crua Tent

With this product, you can rest assured you’ll stay comfortable all through the night.

While it’s slightly thinner than the Exped Megamat 10, the comfort level still scores an impressive 9, only edged out by some really luxurious options.

Equally impressive is the super plush fleece cover. This cover zips off for easy cleaning and the fabric is seam-free and luxurious to the touch.

Even with some loose stones underneath, we couldn’t feel a thing and still had an awesome night of sleep.

Best of all, this is a great mattress to convince your friends or family to join you for weekends in the woods. They’ll think they’re in their own bed.

Overall, when compared to the Therm-a-Rest Luxury Map and others, we found the great ground protection made it easy to have an uninterrupted night of sleep in pretty much any condition.

Ease of Use

All campers know what they do and don’t like.

And one thing that we really don’t like is attempting to blow up a mattress in the dark.

No worries.

This self-inflating mattress has you covered.

Now, granted you’ll see it scores in the middle of the pack in this category. This is partially because most premium air pads are now self-inflating, so this important feature didn’t really set the Therm-a-Rest apart from the field.

However, our testers had no problems with the ease of use. It’s just simply a bit slow.

No problem there, a few quick breaths into the air valve, and in short order you’ll have your fully inflated bed for the night.

Just make sure to shut that two-way valve quickly to prevent air loss.

Even Better. When you wake up the next morning it’s a simple matter to just release the air-valve, use your knees to roll up the pad and push the air out, close the valve, and voila.

We do have a suggestion here.

Don’t bother with trying to stuff it back into the storage sack.

That takes work and you’re ready for coffee now anyway right?

Instead, simply clip the storage straps which double as handy-dandy over the shoulder carrying straps and walk away.

Warmth

This metric is all about avoiding my all time pet-peeve; getting too cold at night.

I absolutely loved the warmth offered by the Dreamtime - one of our top scorers in this category.

The Therm-a-Rest Dreamtime has an R-value of 10.

For anyone new to camping - or camping pads - the R-value is the resistance an insulating material offers to conductive heat flow.

Thus, the higher the score, the better the ground insulation.

What may also be news to some, is that when it comes to sleeping on the ground it’s most important to insulate from below for maximum warmth.

This is where this mattress really shines.

Even when tested in snowy, freezing conditions high in the Rockies we stayed toasty warm.

But, even more impressive, is that when camping in warmer temperatures we stayed equally comfortable due to the insulation properties of the 2.5-inch-thick, self-inflating air mattress with a one-inch layer of memory foam.

At the end of the day, this mattress will give you a comfy night in the woods.

Versatility

A great car camping mattress usually comes with hefty size.

Here, ironically perhaps, is where the Therm-a-Rest Dreamtime really shines with another great score

You see.

Big comfort and extra insulation for warmth come in big packages.

Where the size and comfort of this product really come into play is the sheer versatility.

Big enough to be comfortable but small enough to pack in the car, this is a great option for sending the kids to summer camp, having overnight guests, or car camping.

A perfect trifecta.

The removable cover makes it an easy loan-out as you can just toss the cover in the laundry once you’re home, and it’s as good as new!

Certainly, this mattress packs a punch though and you’re not going to be backpacking more than a short distance with it.

Though you can remove the foam topper leaving you with a smaller, lighter air pad to head deeper into the woods.

And any sort of modification is always a great sign of versatility.

If you camp with others, you’ll need a good-sized tent to accommodate two of them.

And yet, this is where the versatility once again comes into play.

Therm-a-Rest designed straps that connect the two mats together so they don’t separate during the night.

Perfect for couples. Lovely.

Packed Size

This final category is where the Dreamtime unfortunately has drawbacks.

Obviously, if you’re bringing great comfort and warmth to the table coupled with lots of versatility you’re going to bring great size along with it.

The Therm-a-Rest Dreamtime is among the largest we tested when rolled up and stored away.
