Analysis Comparisons and Test Results

We rigorously field-tested (literally!) our Hassock Portable Lightweight Self-Contained Toilet in a variety of settings.

We took it on a long road trip with kids to see family, we used it for a street party, and finally for a weekend hunting trip.

With so many options on the market today the research can be pretty confusing - hence we’ve done the hard work for you here.

We particularly loved the double-bucket design and comfortable seat.

After extensive use in the field, we highly recommend the Reliance Hassock Portable Toilet for those of you wanting some comfort at camp while still retaining the feeling of simplifying life and communing with Mother Nature.

Using our five metrics of product testing, this toilet quickly made mincemeat of the competition - and combined with the low price-point it easily earned our BEST VALUE award.

Now, let’s delve deeper into the subject so you can understand how we came to our conclusions.

Weight & Compactness

Camping purchases often come down purely to size, and choosing a camping toilet is no different.

Of all of the toilets we tested, the Hassock Portable Chemical Toilet sits at the top of the field for weight and compactness.

A common concern in any camping toilet is height.

After all, no one wants to struggle to get comfy when time is of the essence.

While the product certainly sits lower than your toilet at home, the decent 14” of height is good for the majority of users and it’s plenty stable enough to allow nearly 300lbs in weight on top.

The actual weight of the Hassock portable toilet itself is a mere 5lbs so you can easily make it a regular addition to your camping kit.

It was dead easy to find a convenient spot for it behind our tent.

Keep in mind - if Reliance Hassock is still just too big, they also offer a folding portable toilet. The folding option is a bit less sturdy and isn’t self-contained, however, it also offers a Hassock toilet bag and does fold down to only 5” in height when not in use.

A dream for the true minimalist.

Ozark Trail offer a similar folding portable toilet but we found it a bit tricky to lock the legs into place.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Now our toilet talk is getting real...

Once again, our TopNotch Best Value award winner leads the pack with a score of 8/10.

For this product Reliance intelligently designed their portable toilet knowing that no one really wants to have to deal directly with the cleanup.

Their first important step was to develop their double bucket system.

Basically, the interior bucket, where you do your business, sits inside a second exterior bucket.

With the double bucket method, you never have to touch the interior compartment.

In addition, by using a Hassock toilet bag inside the interior bucket the contents are well-contained and effective clean-up involves simply removing the bag and disposing of it.

Simple.

While the brand name toilet bags do have an appealing scent, after multiple uses we found that simply using Cat Litter in a traditional garbage bag was just as convenient and easy, but saved a few dollars.

The product also features a double-lid system with the second lid acting as a toilet paper holder.

Nifty.

Also, Reliance is so confident in their brand they offer an incredible 5-year guarantee.

Capacity

You’ll no doubt be curious about how often you’ll be cleaning your Hassock Portable Toilet.

Well, that depends  - of course.

The Hassock Double Doodie brand bags offer a 4-gallon capacity, which is plenty for a couple of campers for the weekend.

But, what’s important to remember is that you’re not totally getting rid of the waste.

The double lid system absolutely holds odors at bay but you’ll still no doubt want to change out the toilet bags at least every other day.

Especially in warmer environments.

While we love the double-thickness self-contained features, the fact that the contents are never truly removed (unless the bag is changed) brought the rating down a bit in this category.

The Bottom Line (no pun intended!)...

...Similar products such as the Stansport Portable Camping Toilet offer reduced capacity due to design. The Stansport toilet also features a double bucket design but the larger space between the two buckets means less interior capacity than our TopNotch Best Value pick and it has a higher purchase price point.

Portability

Once again, our award winner scores at the top of the field.

When it comes to portability the Reliance Hassock Portable Toilet ranks at the top spot.

As we’ve noted, for camping - the lightweight ease of this product gets almost full marks.

The small dimensions and handle feature means its perfect for road trips or van dwellers.

One of my TopNotch colleagues and a fellow tester, now considers the Hassock a necessity on car trips with the kids - stops her forever looking for suitable places to pull over.

It can also be an easy add-on for those living in small RV’s or vans.

Despite its compact size the Reliance toilet still features a contoured seat, not unlike your home toilet - and it makes for a comfy spot to park your bottom.

Ease Of Use & Set-Up

Well, you guessed it.

Our TopNotch award-winning Hassock once again tops the charts when it comes to ease of use and set-up.

After all, it really doesn’t get much simpler than this.

Although the thoughtful features and upgrades are certainly cut above a basic bucket toilet, at the end of the day what you have is a bucket within a sturdy and comfortable bucket.

Add a handle for ease of carrying and you’re all set up.

Of course, you’ll want to take a minute to add in the bags and a bit of kitty litter to get started but set-up really doesn’t get any easier than this.

The polyethylene material just takes a quick wipe-down to remove any travel dust and debris and your camping trip can begin.

Conclusive Thoughts On The Reliance Hassock Portable Lightweight Self-Contained Toilet

We highly recommend this Hassock portable toilet - it’s just so darned easy!

While there are certainly fancier versions of flush camper toilets, for truly basic ease of design and use this ticks every single box.

We loved the fact that it achieves high rankings in almost all metrics, but also really appreciated the solid design which raises a basic bucket toilet to such a comfortable experience.

The Reliance Hassock is extremely well priced and the clean-up doesn’t come any easier.

On top of that, the compact weight and size mean it’s perfect for road trips as well as weekend camping excursions or even outdoor parties with tipsy teenagers at home.

Overall, if you’re looking for a well-made, basic camping toilet that’s super easy to clean and simple to set up, the Hassock Portable toilet fits the bill.

No hesitation for our TopNptch Best Value choice - now it’s over to you!
